Sharpay was obviously superior in everything from vocal ability to showmanship and stage presence, so why does Gabriela always end up on top? Moments in the movies where Gabriela beats Sharpay in some sort of musical show are supposed to be triumphant, but most of them just leave me with a sick taste in my mouth. Sure, Vanessa Hudgens has a nice voice (I actually hate it and think she sounds like a Alvin and the Chipmunks reject, but whatever), but it is so not a Broadway voice. The cherry on top of this cupcake of hatred is her supposed prowess in musical theater. Gabriela is practically perfect and on top of that, she’s got a gorgeous boyfriend, and every guy in the school drools over her.

Plus being introverted and shy is NOT a flaw. Gabriela being arrogant doesn’t count as a flaw if Troy thinks that her irritating laugh and nasty feminist ideas are oh-so sexy. I know we’ve said this before, but a flaw that doesn’t help the character on their journey is not a flaw at all. Every character, especially main characters, have to have flaws and idiosyncrasies that make them relatable to a flawed human audience, and Gabriela was severely lacking in that department. Gabriela was flawless, and not in a good way.

It’s obvious to me that Vanessa Hudgens doesn’t understand anything about unpopularity, or being an outsider, and boy did that show in her portrayal of our girl Gab. Regardless, Gabriela was an unrealistic representation of her persona from the opening scene of HSM to the finale of the final movie.Īs an unpopular introverted nerd, I have a HUGE problem with watching some gorgeous extrovert with two brain cells pretend to be a shy and introverted genius.

In order for the High School Musical franchise to redeem itself, it needed a new female lead, and I would so cast Sharpay Evans for the part.īefore I go any further, I think it’s important to point out that the first movie was really the only one to show accurate representation of different stereotypes and characters the s econd and third sort of threw character development to the wind and gave everyone the same cookie-cutter extrovert persona. And Sharpay really is the reason I’m writing this post at all. Overall, the trilogy did a decent job portraying other stereotypes flighty piano nerd Kelsey, arrogant basketball boy Troy, slightly gay theater boy Ryan, and of course his spoiled diva of a sister, Sharpay. Vanessa Hudgens portrayal of the “nerd girl” stereotype was so unrealistic that it made the movies lose a lot of their credibility. That’s right, I’m talking about Gabriela, the “nerdy” and beautiful heroine of the movies, a character I hate more than just about anything else on earth. This Disney channel extravaganza jumped into existence in the 2000’s and instantly became a bit of a phenomenon, but despite the movies’ somewhat positive message, catchy musical numbers, and epic choreography, there is one glaring flaw that I just can’t bring myself to ignore.

If you’re an American born any time before 2006, I’d bet a million dollars that you have seen or at least heard of High School Musical.
